Company Overview: The University of Victoria Innovation and Development Corporation (IDC; idc.uvic.ca ) is a private company wholly owned by the University of Victoria (UVic). Its mission is to provide industry liaison services and facilitate the transfer of technology developed at UVic to the private sector. IDC is responsible for commercializing technologies and providing management expertise in the areas of industry liaison, technology evaluation, contract negotiation, intellectual property management, and new enterprise development.
Job Summary:
IDC is seeking qualified candidates with a strong science background for the position of Technology Transfer Officer (Science). Applicants should be interested in pursuing a career in science management/technology commercialization. The successful candidate will work in a team environment, but report directly to IDC’s Manager, Industrial Relations. This is a continuing position with opportunities for growth and professional development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Promote university research activities to industry.
- Identify promising technologies and opportunities for collaboration.
- Facilitate the development and finalization of licensing arrangements and funded collaborative research projects with industry.
- Assist in commercialization activities at UVic for technologies that, primarily, originate from the Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology, and Chemistry.
- Conduct technology evaluations, patent, trademark and prior art searches for intellectual property, utilizing a number of on-line databases, search engines, and other methods.
- Conduct primary and secondary market research and analysis of industry opportunities.
- Prepare and update technology transfer notes and other internal and external marketing documents.
- Other duties (as required).
Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum B.Sc. (e.g. Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry).
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to balance multiple projects.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or in teams.
- Enthusiasm, strong work ethic, and ability to demonstrate initiative.
- Tact, discretion, and the ability to handle confidential information.
- Familiarity with industry (or the “business of science”).
- Familiarity with diverse technologies and/or scientific fields.
- Familiarity with markets, market analysis, and modes of scientific technology development.
- Experience in industry and/or interest in a business setting, contracts, and intellectual property.
- Solid computer skills: including fluency in MS Office, Internet searching, and the knowledge and ability to search scientific databases, etc.
